EUROPOLY has designed and manufactured a bespoke polyester enclosure to protect electrical equipment installed at the Kourou aerospace site. This project demonstrates our ability to develop technical solutions tailored to the most demanding environments, where resistance to corrosion, UV radiation, humidity and impact is essential.
A particularly demanding tropical environment
Located in French Guiana, the Kourou space centre is subject to extreme weather conditions. Its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean exposes the facilities to highly saline air, whilst high temperatures, constant humidity and UV radiation accelerate the ageing of the equipment.
To ensure the reliability of the electrical installations in such an environment, the enclosures had to meet high technical standards and guarantee long-term protection.
A requirement: to provide long-term protection for electrical equipment
One of France’s leading installation companies commissioned us to manufacture polyester enclosures capable of safeguarding critical equipment at the Kourou aerospace site.
Project constraints
The specifications set out several essential criteria:
- IK10-certified mechanical impact resistance;
- IP65 protection against dust and water splashes;
- excellent corrosion resistance in marine environments;
- high resistance to UV radiation;
- thermal insulation to limit the temperature rise in electrical equipment.
These requirements ruled out the use of a standard solution and called for a fully bespoke design.
A polyester cabinet designed for extreme environments
To address these constraints, EUROPOLY has developed a bespoke polyester cabinet incorporating a number of specific technical solutions.
IP65 IK10-certified protection
To ensure that performance standards are met, the cabinets were tested by SOCOTEC. These tests confirmed their IK10 impact resistance and IP65 ingress protection rating, guaranteeing optimum protection for the electrical equipment.
A design suited to the tropical climate
A number of technical decisions have helped to improve the durability of the cabinets:
- application of a high UV-resistant polyurethane coating;
- enhanced anti-corrosion treatment;
- use of a light colour to minimise heat absorption;
- incorporation of IP65-rated ventilation grilles;
- internal insulation made from high-density polyurethane foam to reduce the internal temperature.
All of these solutions help to maintain the equipment’s performance despite a particularly harsh environment.
