EUROPOLY has designed and manufactured bespoke polyester enclosures to protect sensitive electrical equipment at the Kourou space centre in French Guiana. Background

An extreme tropical environment

One of France’s leading system integrators commissioned us to manufacture protective enclosures to safeguard strategic equipment at the Kourou Space Centre.
Given the extreme climatic conditions in French Guiana, a standard solution could not meet the project’s requirements. A fully bespoke design was necessary.

Need

Making electrical equipment safe

The customer was looking for a polyester enclosure capable of:
providing long-term protection for electrical equipment;
withstanding corrosion in a coastal environment;
minimising internal heat build-up;
maintaining its performance despite constant exposure to UV radiation;
being certified to IK10 and IP65 protection ratings.

Protection of electrical equipment – tropical

The Kourou site is subject to particularly harsh climatic conditions. Located close to the Atlantic Ocean, the cabinets are exposed to high salinity, intense UV radiation, constant humidity and high temperatures. To ensure the reliability of the installations, a number of technical requirements had to be met:
- IK10 mechanical impact resistance
- IP65 protection against dust and water spray
- Enhanced protection against marine corrosion
- Excellent UV resistance
- Thermal insulation to limit the temperature rise of the equipment

Solution

A bespoke polyester enclosure

EUROPOLY has developed a fully bespoke polyester enclosure designed to meet the specific requirements of the project.
To ensure compliance with mechanical performance standards, the enclosures were subjected to tests carried out by SOCOTEC, confirming that they had achieved IK10 and IP65 certification.
To ensure their longevity in a tropical environment, several technical solutions were adopted:
- a polyurethane coating with high UV resistance;
- an anti-corrosion treatment suitable for marine environments;
- a light colour to minimise heat build-up in direct sunlight;
- IP65-rated ventilation grilles;
- internal insulation made of high-density polyurethane foam to reduce the internal temperature. This design helps to protect electrical equipment and extend its service life, even in particularly harsh weather conditions.

A particularly demanding tropical environment

Located in French Guiana, the Kourou space centre is subject to extreme weather conditions. Its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean exposes the facilities to highly saline air, whilst high temperatures, constant humidity and UV radiation accelerate the ageing of the equipment.

To ensure the reliability of the electrical installations in such an environment, the enclosures had to meet high technical standards and guarantee long-term protection.

One of France’s leading installation companies commissioned us to manufacture polyester enclosures capable of safeguarding critical equipment at the Kourou aerospace site.

Project constraints

The specifications set out several essential criteria:

  • IK10-certified mechanical impact resistance;
  • IP65 protection against dust and water splashes;
  • excellent corrosion resistance in marine environments;
  • high resistance to UV radiation;
  • thermal insulation to limit the temperature rise in electrical equipment.

These requirements ruled out the use of a standard solution and called for a fully bespoke design.

To address these constraints, EUROPOLY has developed a bespoke polyester cabinet incorporating a number of specific technical solutions.

IP65 IK10-certified protection

To ensure that performance standards are met, the cabinets were tested by SOCOTEC. These tests confirmed their IK10 impact resistance and IP65 ingress protection rating, guaranteeing optimum protection for the electrical equipment.

A design suited to the tropical climate

A number of technical decisions have helped to improve the durability of the cabinets:

  • application of a high UV-resistant polyurethane coating;
  • enhanced anti-corrosion treatment;
  • use of a light colour to minimise heat absorption;
  • incorporation of IP65-rated ventilation grilles;
  • internal insulation made from high-density polyurethane foam to reduce the internal temperature.

All of these solutions help to maintain the equipment’s performance despite a particularly harsh environment.
