Introduction
A tram line never stops. Neither does its equipment. For a transport infrastructure project in Singapore, Europoly is designing bespoke polyester enclosures for the tram line to protect the disconnectors and contactors in a demanding urban environment. The tropical climate, high humidity and electrical demands call for robust and utterly reliable enclosures.
A need for high capacity in tropical environments
The client needs to equip a tram line that is currently in operation. The switchboards must house specific disconnectors and contactors and be able to support a load of up to 1,000 kg per enclosure. Furthermore, they are installed outdoors, in the heart of the city. They are therefore exposed to heat, humidity and corrosive atmospheres. In this context, a cabinet failure could affect the line’s availability. This is why the project requires a solution that is both mechanically robust and resistant to corrosion.
Co-design and glass-fibre-reinforced polyester
To meet these requirements, Europoly works in close collaboration with the client on the design. Together, the teams specify large polyester enclosures, measuring approximately 2,500 x 2,000 x 600 mm. The material chosen is glass-fibre-reinforced polyester with a gel coat finish. This combination enhances mechanical strength, corrosion resistance and long-term stability. Each enclosure is designed to facilitate the integration of disconnectors and contactors, as well as cabling and maintenance.
Unit tests to ensure operational reliability
Finally, Europoly tests each cabinet individually before delivery. These tests verify the load-bearing capacity, the quality of the assembly and compliance with the project’s electrical requirements. Thanks to this approach, the customer receives bespoke polyester cabinets ready for installation along the tram line, with a high level of confidence regarding their service life, safety and continuity of service.
