Issues, project and solutions

Background

A metro line in a challenging environment

The project involves equipping a metro line in Singapore, where the electrical infrastructure is subject to a tropical climate, high humidity and the demands of continuous operation. The switchboards must house disconnectors and contactors whilst providing long-term protection for the equipment, without disrupting the operation of the urban transport network.

Need

Robust, made-to-measure electrical cabinets

The client requires large electrical cabinets to house specific disconnectors and contactors, with a load capacity of up to 1,000 kg per cabinet, excellent mechanical strength and high corrosion resistance, in a situation where shutting down the metro line is not an option.

constraint

Metro infrastructure and urban transport networks

The cabinets must be installed along an operational metro line, in a hot and humid urban environment, exposed to corrosion, electrical stresses and the safety requirements specific to transport infrastructure. Each cabinet must be able to withstand significant loads whilst ensuring uninterrupted service continuity.

Solution

Co-design and glass-fibre-reinforced polyester

Europoly has developed bespoke polyester enclosures in collaboration with the client, utilising a large-scale housing and glass-fibre-reinforced polyester with a gel coat finish. Each enclosure is dimensioned to withstand the expected load, facilitate the integration of disconnectors and contactors, and ensure long-lasting protection for the equipment in tropical environments.

Technical points

Technical specifications of the cabinets

  • Bespoke polyester cabinets measuring 2,500 x 2,000 x 600 mm;
  • Reinforced structure capable of supporting up to 1,000 kg;
  • Glass-fibre-reinforced polyester with a gel-coat finish;
  • Designed to accommodate the integration of isolators and contactors;
  • Enhanced protection against corrosion and electrical stress;
  • Unit tests carried out on each cabinet prior to delivery.

Introduction

A tram line never stops. Neither does its equipment. For a transport infrastructure project in Singapore, Europoly is designing bespoke polyester enclosures for the tram line to protect the disconnectors and contactors in a demanding urban environment. The tropical climate, high humidity and electrical demands call for robust and utterly reliable enclosures.

A need for high capacity in tropical environments

The client needs to equip a tram line that is currently in operation. The switchboards must house specific disconnectors and contactors and be able to support a load of up to 1,000 kg per enclosure. Furthermore, they are installed outdoors, in the heart of the city. They are therefore exposed to heat, humidity and corrosive atmospheres. In this context, a cabinet failure could affect the line’s availability. This is why the project requires a solution that is both mechanically robust and resistant to corrosion.

Co-design and glass-fibre-reinforced polyester

To meet these requirements, Europoly works in close collaboration with the client on the design. Together, the teams specify large polyester enclosures, measuring approximately 2,500 x 2,000 x 600 mm. The material chosen is glass-fibre-reinforced polyester with a gel coat finish. This combination enhances mechanical strength, corrosion resistance and long-term stability. Each enclosure is designed to facilitate the integration of disconnectors and contactors, as well as cabling and maintenance.

Unit tests to ensure operational reliability

Finally, Europoly tests each cabinet individually before delivery. These tests verify the load-bearing capacity, the quality of the assembly and compliance with the project’s electrical requirements. Thanks to this approach, the customer receives bespoke polyester cabinets ready for installation along the tram line, with a high level of confidence regarding their service life, safety and continuity of service.
