Issues, project and solutions

Background

Context for EV charging infrastructure deployment at industrial or commercial sites

The cabinet is located at the base of the terminal, in the immediate vicinity of the vehicle parking area. It is positioned at the edge of the site, above a concrete slab, with front access for control operations, index reading and electrical maintenance. The project is part of the deployment of charging points on an existing site, with the need to limit the footprint and keep a sober facade on the road side.

Need

Consolidate metering and EV charging infrastructure into a single cabinet.

The main need was to have a compact cabinet allowing two functions to be centralized: - the delivery point and blue rate metering for supplying the installation;- distribution dedicated to electric vehicle charging stations. The client was looking for a robust and readable solution, with physical separation of the compartments and an envelope suitable for outdoor use, while avoiding having to multiply envelopes on site.

constraint

EV charging infrastructure – power supply for electric vehicle charging stations.

For this EV charging application, the client required an outdoor cabinet capable of handling both the standard-tariff metering and power distribution to the charging stations, while maintaining a clear separation of functions and ensuring easy access for operations. The cabinet needed to blend visually into the existing site environment, which led to the selection of a specific RAL 7016 finish.

Solution

A 2-door Euro Medium cabinet painted RAL 7016, wired by Polyelec.

The implemented solution is based on an enclosure from the Euro Medium range—300 mm deep—configured with two doors to separate functions. The left door houses the "Blue Tariff" supply/metering point, along with the associated metering and protection equipment, while the right door is dedicated to the EV charging infrastructure (IRVE). The cabinet was personalized in RAL 7016 paint for better visual integration into the site environment, in accordance with the color customization possibilities offered by Europoly. The complete wiring of the electrical distribution and the IRVE was carried out by Polyelec, a Europoly group company, in order to provide a turnkey solution ranging from the polyester cabinet to the final electrical integration.

Some other achievements...

Europoly and Polyelec have manufactured a polyester EV charging point electrical cabinet from the Euro Medium range to power and safeguard several electric vehicle charging points in a car park, featuring discreet integration and a clear separation between metering and EV charging point distribution.

Project overview

Project name

Euro Medium EV charging point electrical cabinet – electric vehicle charging car park.

Brief summary

The project involves consolidating, within a single polyester electrical cabinet, the blue tariff delivery/metering point and the EV charging point distribution system supplying several electric vehicle charging points in a car park. The Euro Medium polyester electrical cabinet is customised in a dark RAL colour to blend in with the site, whilst remaining suitable for outdoor installation.

Project location

The cabinet is located in a car park designated for electric vehicle charging, at the kerb and in the immediate vicinity of traffic lanes and parking areas.

Type of environment

Outdoor car park – electric mobility, vehicle traffic, exposure to the elements.

Project context

Installation context

The project is being carried out within the context of electric mobility in an open car park:

  • regular vehicle traffic;
  • the presence of several charging points;
  • site layout constraints (parking spaces, road markings, access routes).

The electrical cabinet must remain accessible for operational purposes, without obstructing manoeuvres, whilst being sufficiently close to the charging points to minimise cable lengths and simplify the EV charging infrastructure distribution.

Environmental constraints

The site presents several constraints:

  • exposure to the elements (rain, splashing water, temperature fluctuations);
  • a potentially corrosive environment due to the roadside setting and pollutants;
  • the need to minimise the footprint so as not to reduce parking capacity;
  • careful visual integration so as not to detract from the car park’s appearance.

These requirements naturally point towards a polyester electrical enclosure suitable for outdoor environments, with an IP55/65 protection rating and IK10 impact resistance.

Main requirement: to supply power to and organise the EV charging points

Business requirement

The main requirement was to ensure the safety of the power supply and distribution to the car park’s EV charging points by installing an electrical cabinet capable of:

  • housing the supply point and the ‘blue tariff’ metering system;
  • distributing power to the various EV charging points;
  • clearly organising the functions for operation and maintenance.

The electrical cabinet had to provide a clear separation between the metering section and the EV charging point section, whilst remaining compact and reliable over the long term.

Technical requirements

A number of technical requirements have been defined:

  • glass-fibre-reinforced polyester casing, double insulation (Class II) for electrical safety;
  • IP55/65 protection rating for outdoor installation;
  • IK10 mechanical impact resistance to withstand impacts and everyday use;
  • option to customise the colour (dark RAL) for better integration into the site;
  • EV charging point wiring carried out by a specialist to ensure the reliability of the power distribution and safety features.

Proposed polyester solution

Customised Euro Medium 2-door electrical cabinet

Europoly supplied a polyester electrical cabinet from the Euro Medium range, 300 mm deep, configured with two doors to separate the functions. The left-hand door is dedicated to the blue-tariff supply/metering point, whilst the right-hand door houses the EV charging infrastructure (IRVE) section: protection devices, equipment and distribution to the charging points.

The electrical cabinet was customised in a dark RAL colour to blend into the car park environment, with installation on a concrete slab and front access for operations teams.

Europoly + Polyelec synergy
